The Quest for the Go-Kart Frame

The Search Begins

After finalizing our decision to build a go-kart, we set out on our first major task: finding the perfect frame. We needed a sturdy and reliable foundation to build upon, so we began our search with specific criteria in mind. We wanted a frame that was:

  • Structurally sound

  • Suitable for an electric motor conversion

  • Affordable and within our budget

The Road Trip

Our search led us to various online marketplaces and local classifieds. After a few weeks of searching (we must have called every mechanic and go-karting place in Toronto), we found a promising candidate. The catch? It was located two hours away from our hometown. Undeterred, we decided to make a road trip out of it.

The trip itself was an adventure. We loaded up our car with tools and supplies, just in case we needed to make any adjustments on the spot. The drive was filled with excitement and anticipation as we discussed our plans and visions for the go-kart.

Acquiring the Frame

When we arrived, we were greeted by an old go-kart frame from the early 2000s. Despite its age, the frame was in decent condition and came with wheels and a few other components. After a thorough inspection, we decided it was perfect for our project. We negotiated a fair price and loaded the frame into our car, eager to begin the real work.

Initial Assessment

Back home, we unloaded the frame and conducted a more detailed assessment. Here’s what we found:

  • Frame Condition: The frame was structurally sound but showed signs of wear and tear.

  • Wheels: The wheels were usable but needed some refurbishing.

  • Other Components: A few other components were present but outdated.

The next step was clear: we needed to strip the frame of its components and prepare it for refurbishment.

Next Steps

In our next post, we will detail the process of stripping the go-kart frame, sanding, and priming it in preparation for painting. This phase was crucial to ensure the frame was in the best possible condition for our project.

Stay tuned as we continue our journey of transforming an old go-kart frame into a high-performance electric go-kart!
